Flame Retardants and IQ
Manufacturers for furniture has stopped using flame retardants for over a decade, yet many of the compounds are still found in homes. Researchers collected blood samples from pregnant women in order to find the impacts of exposure to flame retardants. It was discovered that PBDEs have a correlation with behavior and cognition difficulties during childhood. After tracking the children for the first 5 years of their life, it was clear that the children who had the highest expose had an average lower IQ than the other children. These chemicals can also act as a hormone disruptor, interfering with the endocrine system.
The only thing that can really be done about this is to let people know the dangers of old furniture. People aren't really knowledgeable about the situation, so they need to be informed. Although there is a lot of people who don't really have a choice because they can't afford new furniture, or they are in a public space using old furniture. Not only does this hurt your body, but it will also hurt the children you don't even have yet. This is almost equivalent to a women drinking alcohol while pregnant.
