Everyday Exposure to Toxic Pollutants
Most environmental laws in the U.S. only control the release of dangerous waste in the air and water, but don't address the amount of contact that people will have with the pollutants. There is more focus on the emissions instead of the exposure and disregards how easily the substances can reach our body. Obvious things like automobiles and factories that cause pollution may be the biggest problems when it comes to the big picture, but more smaller things harm our bodies more. Example of these things are air fresheners and building materials. Reducing the amount of cigarette smoke would actually be more affecting that lowering industrial emissions when it comes to human health.
While we should be concerned for our environment, we also have to be cautious for our health as well. Now that I've read this, it makes more sense for the things that the things that are close to you and cause pollution will be more harmful to your health. A factory may produce much more chemicals that will harm your body, but will still be dispersed throughout the air. But an air freshener will have a much higher concentration because it is in your house. As usual, people just need to be more aware of the danger of certain chemicals that are most likely in their house.
